NBC NEWS - 2017 PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION PACKAGE
NBC Universal
Concept Design, Art Direction, Storyboards, Segments and subsequent Presidential packages

For the 2017 Presidential Election NBC was looking for a different approach to the network graphics package, one that would stand apart from the others. I knew the easy solution would be a logo set in a predictable initial-capped, serif type treatment contrasted with a spencerian script. So I decided to try a letter spaced, san serif Brandon Grotesk instead against a deconstructed American flag . I treated the photography with a slightly mezzotinted black and white effect. Motion - Heemon Kwon.

NETWORK REDESIGN PITCH
MSNBC, NBC Universal

Network re-skin pitch. It was largely based on imagery projected on to glass panels. Crystal-like, rainbow, refracted light edges. Photography was meant to look like it was projected on to glass panels. A lot of plays with light, flares and shadow to give the impression of depth and movement.

THE WASHINGTON POST AND MSNBC PITCH
MSNBC - NBC Universal
Concept designs and storyboards for a new show that was in development on MSBNC. It was to feature the day's top stories printed in the Washington Post. The directive was to have the design address both print and digital aspects how people get their news. I decided to merge references to the printed newspaper with a pixel-stretching, photo-pixellating colorful nod to the digital age. The project was ultimately killed and reduced to a segment on another show. There are 2 different looks presented here.

UP LATE WITH ALEC BALDWIN
MSNBC - NBC Universal

MSNBC aired a short-lived, late-night talk show starring Alec Baldwin. For this I designed a black and white, film noir - influenced graphic treatment which
reflected late night in NYC. I was responsible for the concept design and storyboard. Logo design - Joe MacDonald. Motion - Heemon Kwon

MONEY, JOBS, IDEAS
Pitch, MSNBC - NBC Universal

This styleframe was a pitch for an MSNBC show entitled Money, Jobs, Ideas which was not used due to the show eventually changing to Velshi and Ruhle.
I loved the type design and the color palette and regret the show changing its name since I saw many interesting possibilities for really cool animation utilizing the connected letterforms as well as the subtle background texture which consisted of a dollar sign, a briefcase and a lightbulb in a stylized profile of a head..

ADVANCING THE DREAM - LIVE FROM THE APOLLO
MSNBC - NBC Universal
Concept Design, Storyboard. Motion: Greg VanWhy

MSNBC aired a special honoring the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC. For this package I created a type-driven background texture using the names of influential people in the African-American community which was later changed to famous quotes by MLK. The concept was for 3 red neon lines, influenced by the Apollo Theater logo, to travel through historic events encountering spotlights which highlighted the guests who appeared on the show - Magic Johnson, Condoleeza Rice, Stevie Wonder and Tyler Perry. Along the bottom was part of the speech presented in an interesting type-treatment. The lines were originally meant to resolve into the Apollo logo in the endframe. The top image is the logo/ endframe I pitched. The bottom is the open animation which resolves on the endframe with the logo NBC wanted to use.
HEADLINERS
MSNBC, NBC Universal
This was a pitch created for MSNBC's Sunday night original programming documentary series, Headliners. It begins with fragments of the deconstructed
Headliners logo animating on screen, eventually coming together along with photos and other elements to form the end frame. Each show was to feature a different celebrity and the logo would have different color breaks specific to each. The treatment of the name of the featured celebrity would change for each, as well as the treatment of the imagery. Cher was slick and glamourous, where Steve Bannon was gritty and newspaper, news-like.

MEGYN KELLY TODAY PITCH
NBC Universal

Megyn Kelly was given her own show as part of NBC's Today show, assuming the 3rd hour spot. Since this was part of a.m. programming the intent was to give this a sunrise, morning like feeling. Type and photos move left and right in contrary motion, overlapping with varying degrees of transparency. Logo animates together in the endframe, where the Y in Megyn rests within the center of the M in the MK logo. Vertical line precidely hits the right vertical side of the M. MK pattern fills the large MK.
Beneath the storyboard you can see how the MK logo, when duplicated and revolved around a central point can come together to create a sun.

CNBC 20TH ANNIVERSARY NETWORK ID
CNBC - NBC Universal

When CNBC was celebrating its 20th anniversary I was asked to design a new ID /bug incorporating the 20 somehow into the CNBC logo. Here is my pitch,
which carefully wove the 20 through the white lines of the NBC pecock. The intent was to clearly show the number 20 while still keeping the integrity of the iconic peacock. Motion: John Rehm
BLUE DOT IN A RED STATE PROMO - THE RACHEL MADDOW SHOW
MSNBC - NBC Universal
Concept, Design and Storyboard. Motion - Kevin Boudreau
This was a piece for MSNBC promoting Rachel Maddow's Blue Dot in a Red State blog. It was originally longer and incorporated population and demographic

statistics but unfortunately was edited down to make it 00:20.
